The Professional Jet Ski Rescuer, Nico Karolla, Joins Brazilian Big Wave Pro Surfer Imbica

Please Read First:

Due to the urgency of this invitation and travel logistics, I'm submitting this proposal directly for voting. Imbica has already departed for Nazaré.

TL;DR:

I'll spend one month in Portugal creating a vlog series as a jet ski rescuer among Big Wave Riders, capturing the culture, challenges, and behind-the-scenes moments. I am requesting 5.9k USDC to cover travel costs, professional filming and editing, merchandise, and local support.

Concept:

This IG vlog will dive into the life of jet ski rescues and big wave surfing in Nazaré, following the biggest swells and documenting the inner workings of a big wave team. The content will amplify the Gnars community's role in reaching one of the most challenging places in the surf world, sharing our experiences and showing the potential of web3 as an alternative path in the industry.

Content Plan:

  • Daily Vlog Updates: From arrival in Portugal, we’ll post daily about the routines, emotions, and adrenaline involved in surfing, riding, and rescue missions in Nazaré.

  • Collaborative Episodes: Each episode will showcase Gnars, with collab posts between Nico, Imbica, and the Gnars Instagram, building an immersive series.

  • Behind-the-Scenes Access: We’ll cover all aspects of the jet ski teams at Nazaré, including machine preparation, extreme-condition navigation, and the evolution of the sport alongside local authorities.

This content will provide exclusive insight into one of the most respected environments in surfing, introducing new audiences to the Gnars and web3 communities.

ACHIEVEMENTS:

  • Reaching Nazaré – a true milestone in big wave surfing.
  • Showcasing the Gnars team in Nazaré alongside the world’s top big wave athletes.
  • Branding a jet ski with Gnars imagery in Nazaré.
  • Imbica rides a wave carrying a Gnars flag.
  • Producing a YouTube docuseries – 5-6 episodes.
  • Nico surfs his first wave ever.

Who Am I?

I'm Nico Karolla, the first jet rescue pilot in the nautical field to be sponsored by crypto and an NFT community—Gnars (since December 2022). I’ve been involved in community outreach for the nautical world for nearly two years.

In December 2022, I received funding to represent Gnars as a shredder for six months, and I've proudly served as an ambassador for over a year without further funding from the community.

For more details, see #Insights Nico Karolla Gnars, which highlights my first eight months of work for Gnars.

Together with other Gnarly friends, I’ve organized public good events representing Gnars—all without any funding. img img

This proposal isn’t retroactive funding, I'm not requesting support for my past work with the community but specifically for this Nazaré project to promote Gnars.

I'm a professional in my field, my main work is as an instructor, rescuer, and water safety professional for sports events. While I’m passionate about what I do, this is my career, and I truly value the community’s support to continue shredding.

Who Will I Work With?

Paulo Diego “Imbica”, a big wave surfer, tow-in, and rescue pilot. He has competed in some of the world’s top big-wave championships, with standout achievements, including champion of the Nazaré Gigantes Trials in 2021, third place in the Brazilian Big Wave Championship in 2021, and third in Itacoatiara Big Waves 2024. He also previously earned both second and first places in other events by the International Tow-In Association.

Note: I've already onboarded Imbica to Gnars and web3, and he holds a Gnars NFT.
